Boleos are dynamic and fun movements that can be used to great effect when timed well with the sharp rhythmical accents so common in Tango music. Depending on the technique, they can be slow or quick, heavy or light, linear or circular, short or long, high or low – and we will give you the tools to explore and shape these boleos to fit different qualities in the music, your artistic expression or the restraints of your surroundings on the dance floor. Since boleos have a risk of endangering other dancers around you, it is very important to be able to control the size, timing and direction of boleos for both leaders and followers. There are few things more scary for a follower than being lead boleos you feel like you can't execute safely, or for a leader to dance with a follower doing boleos that are not lead or at a different size and direction than lead. So we will work on both individual technique and the technique of leading and following these boleos so you can safely and comfortably perform boleos on the dance floor, working together to manage the space you're dancing in.
Did you know that Boleos are also called Voleos? Since the sound of a B and V are so similar in many Spanish dialects, and there are very few written accounts of the origin of tango terminology, it's not clear exactly where the term comes from. Some claim it comes from volea which is a football volley shot, some say it's related to the verb volear which means to fly, and others say it comes from the boleadoras of Argentine Folklore dance – where balls are tied to a piece of string and whipped around in circles as instrument for both percussion and dance. Whether you like to think of the free leg as flying, kicking or whipping around, the image is clearly one of speed, power and acceleration...
What will you learn?
In this 6-hour masterclass, we will show you how to lead, follow and execute boleos safely and comfortably, as well as using different techniques for different kinds of boleos, to change the speed, timing, direction and style of the movement. We will give you individual exercises to work on the technical execution of different boleos, making them look and feel good. Exercises for couples will focus on leading and following different boleos by changing the technique and body mechanics. And of course, we will teach you various sequences to practice the different boleos in context, so you can remember them and be inspired to create your own sequences.
