The Art of Musicality

  • Dancify 11 Eikenga Oslo, Oslo, 0579 Norway (map)

What is musicality? How can you become a more musical dancer? What does it mean to 'dance the pauses' and how do you do it? How can listening to the music help you connect to your partner?

In this seminar we explore the musical structures in tango, and see how they relate to the structure of tango steps and adornos. By understanding the form and phrasing of tango, it will be easier to recognize, memorize and predict the music. By learning to dance the phrases, leaders will naturally create more space for a dialogue with the follower, and followers will recognize where they can embellish or shape the quality of the movement. Through dancing musical exercises and challenges, we will work on the musical elements of form, phrases, rhythm, dynamics, pauses, tension and release, and quality of movement.

We will use examples of combinations set to music, as a learning tool to help you recognize the musical elements and ideas, but it's not learning sequences or the technical execution of the steps that will be the focus of this seminar. Instead we hope you will gain a deeper understanding of the tango music, and that you will be able to connect to the music with your partner.

Level

Musicality is something you can always work on, regardless of your level. This class is designed to give an understanding of the structure of the tango music, so that each couple can use their own repertoire to fit the musical phrases. Because there won't be any change of partners during the class, it is easy to accommodate for couples of different levels. As such, it will be suitable for advanced students, as well as intermediate dancers. However we do not recommend this class for beginners - please check out our beginner class instead.
