Tango turns, or giros, serve many different purposes. They create a contrast to linear movements. They can give a feeling of continuous movement and speed in confined spaces. They can be used to change direction and navigate on the dance floor. They can change the dynamic by accelerating or decelerating or use centrifugal force to give a feeling of vertigo. There are many different ways and methods of turning, around the leader's or follower's axis, or with a shared axis. And for each of the turns there are different techniques that can be used to accomplish different results in terms of speed, style and expression. Last, but not least, turns are fun!
What will you learn?
In this 3 hour masterclass we will use a selection of turns around the leader's axis and around the follower's axis to explore different mechanics and embellishments we can use while turning, but also how using turns and circular movements changes the way we dance and navigate on the dance floor. We practice techniques to feel confident turning in the milonga, and practice improvisation to get the freedom to start and stop turns when we want or link turns together, so we can outline the musical phrases with our improvised sequences.
